It may surprise you to know that this piece started about four months ago, which goes to show you that this author kept waiting to see the possibility of a change in the existing status quo on the traffic situation of the Lugbe-Airport road. That is, believing that the people to whom our lives have been given custody will be responsive enough to see what the author is seeing everyday and as such create a change in the imbalance.

In his tribute to Fawehinmi on his 70th birthday, former Attorney General of Lagos State, Professor Yomi Osibajo (SAN), said the legal activist has appeared in court 248 times on the issue of locus standi, which is the legal jargon for a person’s legal right to sue. As far as I am aware he has lost most of those legal battles, mainly, I suspect, because his style was more populist than rigorous. Yet he remained undeterred. That he did so was clearly a testimony to the man’s great courage and conviction.

FROM his sick bed in England, Lagos lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), spoke by phone yesterday with friends and well-wishers who had gathered in Ikeja to commemorate his 70th birthday. The forum was a lecture: “Gani: Bridging the Regeneration Gap,” delivered by Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka. Midway into the programme organised by the Campaign for Democracy (CD), Fawehinmi came on speaker phone, expressing gratitude to the civil society community, the media and the generality of Nigerians for honouring him. Like a true hero, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, took centre stage last week, as family and friends came together to celebrate the 70th birthday of the indefatigable fighter. But Gani, as he is fondly called, is an unusual hero. Unlike most patriots, Gani is lucky to be experiencing an intense show of love and appreciation in his lifetime. The activist, who is currently recuperating from lung cancer in his London home dominated public discourse for nearly two weeks.celebration which came to a climax on Tuesday 22

Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN and SAM) is a name that rings a deafening bell, not only in legal circles in Nigeria and the world over, but in the consciousness of pro-democracy activists within and outside Nigeria. During the Babangida dictatorship, Gani, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and Senior Advocate of the Masses, took on the dictator head-on like other well-meaning Nigerians. The battle between good and evil which Gani and IBB represented (with the evil genius representing evil, of course) was a running one, with the uncompromising Fawehinmi suffering harrasments, arrest, and being thrown into Gashua Prison in Borno State, where he languished in jail for months on end. ‘Nigeria’s precarious situation suffers an increasingly profound disjunction between word and deed by the leaders’ (Larry Diamond 1993 in The Global Resurgence of Democracy) I should interpret Diamond’s views on leadership idiocy in Nigeria to mean leaders not only in political arena but also in business, social circles and civil society. Ganiyu Oyesola Fawehinmi simply referred to in this piece as GOF for brevity, is as popular to Nigeria and Nigerians as the famous Three Crown Matches (Isana Eleeta), so I shouldn’t have problem appraising his past.

Falana said at the book launch: “If I am going to give my own testimony about what Gani has been to me over the years, I will keep you here all day. Actually when I was admitted to Ife University, I wanted to go and do something and get into journalism like many of you who are sitting here today. But Chief Fawehinmi encouraged me to read law. “But like the Bible says, the harvests are plentiful, but the labourers are few. There are many lawyers in the country today. But I am sure you know there are lawyers and there are lawyers.

That top executives of the five biggest U.S. oil companies were recently pressed to explain the soaring fuel prices amid huge industry profits and why they weren't investing more to develop renewable energy source such as wind and solar. That the executives, peppered with questions from sceptical United States lawmakers, said they understood that high energy costs are hurting consumers, but deflected blame, arguing that their profits — $123 billion last year — were in line with other industries. Easter season to the Christian faithful is a season set aside to celebrate the death and the return to life of our Lord and saviour, Jesus Christ. It is celebrated by different people and in different ways at different places. "Soup Kitchen" may look unfamiliar but the relationship between soup and kitchen gives a vivid description of what it ought to be. Soup Kitchen simply is a place where people who have no money can get soup and other food free.
